A daguerreotype from 1844 shows a seated man in a dark coat and cravat, a format that was then barely five years old. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, each one a single unique image rather than a print that could be copied, and sitters often had to hold still for minutes under the lens. The cravat and close-cut coat point to the fashions of the mid-1840s, when a formal portrait was a considered investment. Because the plate is a mirror-like surface, the image shifts with the angle of light, so the sitter's face can appear only when viewed from the right position.
