A man in a dark coat and cravat sits for this portrait, and the sitter remains unidentified, so the picture rests on its physical form rather than a name. Made in 1844, it is a daguerreotype, the first commercially successful photographic process, which fixed an image directly onto a polished silver-coated copper plate. Early daguerreotypes like this one required sitters to hold still for minutes in bright light, and the result was a single, mirror-like image that had to be viewed at an angle to reveal its tones. The cravat and high-collared dress of the period show how men presented themselves before the camera.
