A man of about 55, shown from the head to the shoulders and turned three-quarters to the left, is the subject of this half plate daguerreotype, though his name is not recorded. A number, 89, is scratched on the back of the plate, and a maker's hallmark, Rinhart 9, is stamped there as well. The record credits the plate to the studio of Mathew Brady, whose New York and Washington galleries made portraits of many public figures and private citizens in the 1840s and 1850s. The plate later reached the U.S. War College, which transferred it in 1920.
