Little is known about this man, but the record ties him to another daguerreotype in the same collection, suggesting the two plates came from one sitting or studio visit. The back of the plate is scratched with the number 194, a working mark used to track plates in the studio. Produced by Mathew Brady's studio, the portrait reflects the busy practice Brady ran in New York and Washington during the 1850s. Gold toning, applied after development, warmed the silvery image and strengthened its tones, a finish typical of portraits made between 1848 and 1860.
