Few clues name the sitter of this half-plate daguerreotype, a man of about 40 shown from the waist up and turned three-quarters to the left. Its image has been gold toned, a step that daguerreotypists used to strengthen the picture and adjust its tone. The plate is marked with the hallmark Rinhart 9 and credited to Mathew Brady's studio, which made portraits of many prominent Americans in the 1840s and 1850s. It came to the Library of Congress in 1920 by transfer from the U.S. War College and dates from between 1844 and 1860.
