A daguerreotype from 1844 shows a bearded man in a dark coat, a sitter whose name the record does not give us. What we can read in the plate is the look of early portraiture itself. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper sheets, each one a single unique image rather than a print that could be copied, and exposures in 1844 often ran for several minutes, so sitters were asked to hold still with their expressions set. The dark tones and crisp detail that give this portrait its presence are typical of the process, which Louis Daguerre had publicized in France only a few years earlier.
