A daguerreotype from 1844 gives us a bearded man in a dark coat, captured on a polished silver-coated copper plate that is unlike any paper print. The process, announced in France in 1839, produced a single mirror-like image that viewers had to tilt in the light to see clearly. Portraits like this one needed exposures of several minutes, so sitters held still with the help of head braces, and the sharp detail of the beard and wool coat reflects how fine the early process could be. By the mid-1840s, studios in Europe and America were making such portraits for ordinary middle-class customers, which is why surviving examples like this one document everyday people rather than only the wealthy.
