A bearded man in a dark coat and cravat sits for this portrait, a daguerreotype dated to 1840, the very first decade in which the process was available to the public. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, so each one is a single unique image rather than a print that could be copied, and the mirror-like surface often shows the viewer's own reflection when it is tilted. Exposures then ran for several minutes, which means sitters had to hold still and keep a serious expression, and the stiff, composed pose seen here reflects that demand as much as the fashion of the day.
