Few sitters from the 1840s left a face this direct: the man here wears a dark coat and a loosely knotted cravat, and he meets the lens without the stiff theatrical pose many early portraits adopted. The picture dates to 1844, only a few years after Louis Daguerre publicized his process in 1839, when exposures still ran from several seconds to minutes and sitters were told to hold very still. Daguerreotypes are unique positives on silvered copper, so their tonal range shifts with the angle of light, and this one rewards a slow look as the image moves from silver to shadow.
