A bearded man in a dark coat sits for this portrait, one of the many studio sittings that made the daguerreotype a popular form of likeness in the early 1840s. The process, announced in France in 1839, produced a single positive image on a silvered copper plate, so each portrait was a unique object rather than a print that could be copied. Sitters of this period often had to hold still for several minutes, which is why faces in such pictures can look serious or fixed. Because the record names no sitter, the picture is best read as a window onto everyday middle-class portraiture, when a mirror-bright image on metal was a new and striking way to preserve a face.
