The bearded man in this 1844 daguerreotype wears a dark coat, and the plate's silvery surface brings out fine detail in his beard and collar. Made on a polished silver-coated copper sheet, the image reads as a mirror-like positive that shifts from dark to light as you tilt it. Daguerreotypes had been publicly introduced in 1839, and by the mid-1840s portrait studios were spreading through American and European cities, making a likeness more accessible than ever before. Exposures still took many seconds, so the sitter had to hold his pose, which gives the portrait its steady, serious air.
