A daguerreotype from 1850 shows a woman seated in a lace-trimmed collar, the sort of detail that survives only because the process captured fine textile texture so sharply. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, each one a unique positive image rather than a print from a negative, which is why they carry a mirror-like sheen that shifts as you tilt them. By 1850 the process had been public for only about a decade, and portraits like this one were typically sat for over several seconds in bright light, so subjects often held still with the help of a head rest. The image's identity and the sitter's name are not recorded here, but the lace collar and seated pose reflect the fashions and studio conventions of the period.
