Alice Roosevelt, the outspoken daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, appears here in a full-length standing pose, turned to the left, in a hand-colored print from 1903. The photographer, Frances Benjamin Johnston, was among the most sought-after portraitists of the period, and her studio work captured Washington society at a time when Alice was becoming a national figure. She was then a teenager living in the White House, and the press followed her closely. Hand-coloring added tints to a black-and-white photograph, a costly finishing touch that was popular in the early 1900s.
