Photographed on her 43rd birthday, Alice Roosevelt Longworth sits on a step with her two-year-old daughter, both turned toward the left of the frame. The daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, she became one of Washington's best-known society figures, admired for her sharp wit and outspoken, unconventional manner. Her husband, Nicholas Longworth, served as Speaker of the House in the later 1920s, a period when she was a regular presence in the capital's social life. The picture came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented public figures of the era, and its date is an estimate drawn from the original caption card.
