Alice Roosevelt, the daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt, was a famously independent figure in Washington society, and this full-length study shows her in a ball gown, turned to face left. The photograph was made around 1902 by Frances Benjamin Johnston, one of the most prominent women photographers of the period, who was known for her polished society and presidential portraits. Alice was then a teenager living in the White House, and her public image was taking shape as a source of fascination for newspapers and admirers. Johnston's careful posing of the gown and figure reflects the formal portrait conventions of the early 1900s.
