Roosevelt stands three-quarters length, facing left, with one thumb hooked in his pocket, a relaxed pose for a formal portrait of a man who was then known more for his energy than his stillness. The print is a photogravure, a process prized in the 1890s for its soft tonal range and fine detail, and it carries a copyright notice in the name of Geo. G. Rockwood, a New York photographer who produced portraits of prominent public figures. It dates to about 1898, the year Roosevelt left his post as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to help raise the Rough Riders for the Spanish-American War, and it captures him just before his rise to national fame.
