Standing three-quarters length and turned to his left, Theodore Roosevelt wears uniform in this 1898 portrait, the year he left his post as assistant secretary of the Navy to raise the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, known as the Rough Riders. He led the regiment in the fighting near San Juan Hill in Cuba that summer, and the war made him a national figure. This print comes from a scrapbook assembled by his son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., and his wife, Eleanor Butler Alexander Roosevelt.
