Rather than the seated, formal pose common in official presidential likenesses, this image shows Theodore Roosevelt standing full length, one hand resting on a stairway post. It reproduces a painting by John Singer Sargent, one of the leading portrait painters of the day, whose 1903 likeness of the president was widely admired. Halftone printing broke a painted image into tiny dots that a press could reproduce, which let such artwork appear in magazines and books for readers who would never see the original. The result presents Roosevelt as a confident, energetic public figure early in his presidency.
