This seated, three-quarter-length portrait shows Theodore Roosevelt turned to face right, a pose that was typical of formal studio work in the early 1900s. The image dates to about 1903, a year when Roosevelt was serving as the 26th President and building his public image as a vigorous, outdoorsy leader. The print was made by the C.M. Bell Photographic Company, a Washington, D.C. studio known for its portraits of government officials, and it was registered for copyright, which was a common step for commercially distributed photographs of the era. Its presence in the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division makes it a useful example of how presidential likenesses were produced and circulated before wide use of newspaper halftone reproduction.
