Seated in three-quarter length and turned to the left, Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt appears in this portrait by Frances B. Johnston, a Washington photographer who made many studio images of official life in the capital. The picture dates from around 1903, early in Edith's time as First Lady, after Theodore Roosevelt became president in 1901 following the assassination of William McKinley. Portraits of the first family were widely reproduced in that period, and images like this one helped shape how the public saw the White House.
