Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, who became first lady when her husband, Theodore Roosevelt, took office after William McKinley's assassination in September 1901, sits in this three-quarter-length portrait turned to the left. The print was made around 1901 or 1902 by J. Schloss of New York, a studio whose copyright registration is noted on the record. Portraits like this one were widely circulated in the early 1900s, when photographic cards and prints gave the public a carefully composed view of the White House family. Edith was a private, reserved figure, so her formal pose and measured expression are worth noticing.
