Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt sits turned to the right in this three-quarter view, reproduced from a painting by the French artist Théobald Chartran, who was known for formal portraits of prominent sitters in the early 1900s. Frances Benjamin Johnston, the Washington photographer who documented much of the White House during Theodore Roosevelt's presidency, made the photoprint, so the image is a photograph of a painted likeness. Edith Roosevelt was first lady from 1901 to 1909, and portraits like this one helped present the family in a dignified public light.
