Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt is shown here full length, seated on a bench and turned to the right, with an umbrella held in her hands. The picture comes from the C.M. Bell Studio, a Washington, D.C. firm known for its carefully posed portraits of officials and their families in the decades around 1900. Edith Roosevelt was first lady from 1901 to 1909, after her husband Theodore Roosevelt became president, and she was a childhood friend of his before they married in 1886. Portraits like this one were used to present a composed public image, so the outdoor prop and relaxed pose are worth noticing.
