Here Theodore Roosevelt sits full-length beside a globe and a mantel, a book in hand, turned slightly toward the right of the frame. The portrait dates to about 1908, when Roosevelt was in the final stretch of his presidency, which he would leave in March 1909 after nearly two terms. The National Photo Company, a Washington studio that produced many official-style portraits of public figures in those years, made the picture, and its copyright credit goes to F.B. Hyde. The globe is a deliberate prop: it signals the international concerns of a president who had brokered peace between Russia and Japan and pushed American influence abroad.
