Theodore Roosevelt is shown here full-length, standing beside a table and turned toward the right, with a sheet of paper in one hand and the other resting on the back of a chair. The pose is a studied one: it presents him as a working statesman rather than a formal figurehead, which suits a president who was known for writing constantly and for an energetic public image. The portrait dates to about 1907, the middle of his second term, and was made by the Washington photographer Benjamin Matthew Clinedinst, whose studio produced many official-style likenesses of political figures of the period.
