Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt, the second wife of Theodore Roosevelt, sits in three-quarter profile here while her daughter Ethel leans in with an arm around her shoulders, a pose that captures the close bond between mother and child. The portrait dates to about 1904, the year Theodore Roosevelt was elected president in his own right, when the family lived in the White House and portraits like this one circulated widely among relatives and admirers. Ethel was the eldest child of Edith's stepdaughter-free household from her marriage to Theodore, and she grew into a steady presence in her parents' public life. The photographer, E. W. Trescot, copyrighted the image, which places it among the many studio portraits made of the first family in the early 1900s.
