Ethel Roosevelt, the second daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, sits in this studio portrait shown three-quarters length and turned to her left, a pose typical of formal society photography of the period. The record dates the print to around September 1912, a year when her father was campaigning for the presidency again as the Progressive Party candidate. Portraits of the Roosevelt children were widely reproduced in that era, and images like this one helped the public connect the family with the president's image of vigorous, close-knit domestic life.
