Roosevelt faces the camera in this three-quarter view, posed on a veranda rather than in a studio, which gives the portrait a more relaxed feel than many official photographs of presidents. The record dates it to about September 11, 1905, early in his first full term, which he had won in his own right the previous November. Roosevelt was one of the most photographed Americans of his time, and images like this one, showing him outdoors and at ease, helped shape his public image as an energetic, active leader.
