Here Theodore Roosevelt sits full length at the entrance to a tent, facing the camera in uniform, a pose that suggests the military service he would soon make famous. The picture is dated to about 1898, the year Roosevelt led the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War and returned from Cuba a national hero. The copyright credit to Siegel-Cooper Co., a New York department store that also sold photographs, points to commercial distribution of the image. The date and attribution come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
