Standing full length and facing forward, Theodore Roosevelt is pictured speaking at Carnegie Hall in New York around 1912. That was the year he left the Republican Party and ran for president as the Progressive, or "Bull Moose," candidate, and public appearances like this one were central to his campaign. Roosevelt was known for his forceful oratory, and the photograph conveys the physical energy he brought to the platform. It also shows how political campaigning worked before radio and television, when a candidate's voice and presence in a crowded hall were among the main ways to reach voters.
