Long before he led the Rough Riders up San Juan Hill, Theodore Roosevelt stood facing the camera in a deerskin hunting suit, rifle held across his body, a costume that fit the outdoorsman image he was cultivating. The picture dates to 1885, when Roosevelt was in his twenties and had turned to ranching and hunting in the Dakota Territory after the deaths of his mother and first wife in 1884. Full-length portraits like this one helped present a young easterner as a frontiersman, a persona he carried into his later public career.
