Seen full length on horseback at Luxor, Theodore Roosevelt faces the camera with the Egyptian town behind him. The photograph dates to about 1910, roughly a year after he left the presidency, during a journey that began with a hunting expedition in East Africa and then moved north through Egypt. Luxor sits on the Nile near the temples of Karnak and the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, so the visit placed a former president among some of the most famous monuments of the ancient world. The print was registered for copyright, a common practice for photographs of the period.
