Theodore Roosevelt stands full length beside a large globe in this 1903 portrait, a pose that nods to his interest in the wider world at a time when the United States was extending its reach across the Pacific and into Central America. The photograph was made by the Rockwood Photo Co. and entered for copyright, a common step for studio portraits of prominent figures in this period, which were widely reproduced in newspapers, magazines and commercial prints. Roosevelt, who had become president in 1901 after William McKinley's assassination, was then in the first full years of his presidency and was carefully shaping his public image, so a formal studio portrait like this one carried real weight.
