Theodore Roosevelt stands full length, facing the camera, in front of a doorway, a setting that leaves the former president's figure to carry the composition. The print was made around 1918, in the last year of Roosevelt's life; he died in January 1919, after a long decline in health that followed his 1912 Progressive Party campaign and his wartime criticism of the Wilson administration. The studio of Harris & Ewing, a Washington, D.C., firm known for portraits of officeholders, made the photograph, and its copyright registration with the U.S. Copyright Office shows it was issued for public circulation. Pictures like this were widely reproduced in newspapers and magazines of the era.
