Standing beside a large globe and facing the camera, Theodore Roosevelt is shown here in a full-length pose that puts the presidency's global reach in the frame. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office around February 1903, a year after Roosevelt had succeeded William McKinley and while he was still building his own public image as an energetic, outward-looking leader. Rockwood Photo Co. made the image, and studio portraits like this one were widely reproduced in newspapers and magazines of the era. The globe is a telling prop, since American interests in Panama, the Philippines and Asia were prominent in Roosevelt's early presidency.
