Theodore Roosevelt sits at the center of this c1904 portrait, the only figure seated, while his four sons stand or lean around him in a deliberately arranged family group. That contrast is what sets the picture apart from the many formal portraits of the president from these years: it presents him less as a head of state than as a father. Roosevelt was in the White House at the time, and he was known for a large, lively household, so the image reflects a public effort to show the family at the center of his image. The photograph is a useful record of how presidential family portraits were staged in the early 1900s.
