Few pictures of Theodore Roosevelt show him so plainly at home in the outdoors. Here he stands full length beside a horse, turned to the left, dressed in a cowboy outfit rather than the formal suit of a public official. Roosevelt had spent part of the 1880s ranching in the Dakota Badlands, and the rugged western image he cultivated stayed with him long after he left for New York politics. Portraits like this one, dating to about 1910, helped build his reputation as a vigorous, outdoorsman president. The photograph is held by the Library of Congress, which preserves much of the nation's visual record of its leaders.
