Here Roosevelt stands full length, turned to the left and reaching to open a door, an everyday gesture that the photographer chose to freeze. The picture dates to about 1909, the year he left the presidency and handed office to William Howard Taft, and he was then preparing for a long hunting expedition in Africa and a European tour. Photographers often posed him in active, informal moments like this one, which helped sustain the image of a vigorous public man.
