Roosevelt stands at full length with his hands in his coat pockets, turned to the left as he talks with a man identified only as G. Gardner aboard the liner *Kaiserin Auguste Victoria*. The ship was a large passenger steamer of the Hamburg America Line, built for the North Atlantic run between Germany and New York, and before the First World War such vessels carried many Americans on European travel. The caption card records no date, so the exact occasion is uncertain, though the shipboard setting fits the years after Roosevelt left the presidency in 1909.
