Most pictures of Theodore Roosevelt at his Oyster Bay home show him alone or with family, but this one gathers a group of Republican politicians on the lawn at Sagamore Hill, with Joseph Cannon, the powerful Speaker of the House, among them. The record ties the gathering to the Republican nomination committee, which suggests the photograph belongs to the run-up to the 1904 election, when Roosevelt was seeking a full term after taking office following William McKinley's assassination in 1901. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm that sold stereoscopic and press photographs in large numbers, produced the print. The date is approximate, so the exact occasion remains uncertain.
