Posed on the grounds of Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay, New York, President Theodore Roosevelt stands with the members of the committee that formally notified him of his party's nomination. Roosevelt had taken office after William McKinley's assassination in 1901, and this 1904 gathering marked the official start of his campaign for a term of his own. Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for mass-producing stereo views, issued the card, which was designed to be seen through a stereoscope in parlors across the country. Sagamore Hill was Roosevelt's family home, so the setting shows a political ceremony held in a private place.
