Sagamore Hill, the sprawling shingled house at Oyster Bay on Long Island, is the particular subject here, shown as a stereograph card from about 1904 issued by Underwood & Underwood, the New York firm known for mass-producing stereo views. Theodore Roosevelt had bought the property in 1883 and made it his family's main residence, and he was living there while serving as president. The house was a retreat from Washington, where he spent summers and weekends, and it became a symbol of his outdoor, family-centered public image. Stereographs like this one, viewed through a special double-lens viewer, gave armchair visitors a sense of depth and presence.
