Taken at Sagamore Hill, the Oyster Bay, Long Island, estate that Theodore Roosevelt built in the 1880s, this picture shows the former president posed with his neighbors shortly after he left the White House in 1909. Roosevelt returned to Oyster Bay after his presidency and spent much of his remaining decade there, writing, hosting visitors and staying active in public debate. Group portraits like this one capture the everyday, local side of a man who was better known nationally for his political career. The photograph is undated in its record beyond the approximate date of about 1909.
