Few places drew more attention in 1903 than the Grizzly Giant, one of the oldest giant sequoias in the Mariposa Grove near Yosemite, and this stereograph records President Theodore Roosevelt and his traveling party standing before it. Roosevelt spent several days in the Yosemite region that spring, camping and touring the groves with naturalist John Muir, and his visit did much to promote the protection of the big trees. Underwood and Underwood, a leading publisher of stereo cards, produced paired images like this one so that viewers at home could see depth through a stereoscope.
