This stereograph shows President Theodore Roosevelt standing before the giant trees of Big Tree Grove near Santa Cruz, California, a scene the title frames as the nation's chief meeting the "forest king." Roosevelt traveled widely in the West in 1903, and his visits to California's redwoods drew wide press attention and helped build support for preserving them. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm, sold stereo cards like this one in large numbers, so the image was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope and reached many households. Its pairing of a national leader with towering trees makes it a useful record of conservation-minded travel in the early twentieth century.
