Roosevelt is shown riding on the front of a Santa Fe locomotive as the train approaches Redlands, California, a stop on his western tour during his presidency. Railroads were central to how presidents traveled and were seen by the public in these years, and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe line was one of the main routes across the Southwest. The card was published by Underwood & Underwood of New York, a firm that sold stereographs in large numbers. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two side-by-side images gave a sense of depth that flat photographs could not.
