Caught while delivering his address, Theodore Roosevelt speaks on the day he was inaugurated to a full term in March 1905. He had first taken office in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, and his 1904 election gave him a mandate of his own. Published by the American Stereoscopic Company, the picture was made as a stereocard, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope that fused two slightly offset views into a single three-dimensional scene. Cards like this were a popular way for Americans of the period to see national events and public figures at home.
