The stereograph shows Theodore Roosevelt delivering his inaugural address in Washington, D.C., on March 4, 1905, the first inauguration held in his own right. He had taken office in September 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley, and his 1905 election gave him a full term. Stereographs like this one were paired and viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the crowd and the Capitol a sense of depth that was popular in American homes in the early 1900s. The card was issued by the H.C. White Co. of North Bennington, Vermont, a firm known for its stereoview publications.
