Theodore Roosevelt is shown riding on the engine of a Santa Fe Railway locomotive as his train approached Redlands, California, a citrus town in San Bernardino County. The picture dates from around 1903, the year Roosevelt made an extended western tour that brought him through California, and Underwood & Underwood of New York published it as a stereograph. Such cards were sold for viewing in hand-held stereoscopes, which gave travelers and armchair readers a three-dimensional look at presidential journeys and the railroads that carried them.
