Theodore Roosevelt's 1903 western tour took him across California by rail, and this stereograph catches him standing on the front of a Santa Fe locomotive shortly before the train reached Redlands. Stereo cards like this one were sold in sets and viewed through a hand viewer, so the picture was meant to be seen in three dimensions, giving viewers at home a sense of being on the platform beside the president. The engine itself, a Santa Fe machine, is worth a look, since the railroad was central to how presidents traveled and how the West was promoted to the public in these years.
